Fun news! A new hotspot at the Rodezand in Rotterdam Centre will soon open: SHIN. A modern, cosy Japanese tapas bar and izakaya style matcha cafe.

Leuk nieuws! Binnenkort opent een nieuwe hotspot aan de Rodezand in Rotterdam Centrum: SHIN. Een moderne, gezellige Japanse tapasbar en matcha-café in izakaya-stijl.

This brand-new restaurant concept is by restaurant owners Tony and Nanako, who also own the popular Japanese ramen restaurant Ajisan on the Coolsingel. Read about this new hotspot below and check out the renders for an impression of the interior!

Delicious Japanese dishes and Japanese whiskeys

An izakaya bar is a casual Japanese bar where you can go after work for tasty snacks and alcoholic refreshments. Basically the Japanese version of a British pub. Of course you can visit SHIN not only after work, but from 12:00 pm!

What's on the menu? Tony: “There are a lot of Japanese dishes that we miss in the Netherlands. That is why we at SHIN put all our favourite dishes and drinks on the menu.” And don't expect sushi or ramen, because SHIN shows that Japanese cuisine is more than that. For example, they serve crispy chicken, udon noodles, real wagyu from Japan and tasty vegetarian dishes.

Besides the fact that you can order delicious Japanese dishes to share, it is also possible to order Japanese cocktails and whiskeys throughout the day. For example, choose the 'MojiTokyo' with Japanese sake or one of the local whiskeys made with groundwater from the Fuji mountain area.

Different matcha levels

Matcha lovers can indulge themselves at SHIN. Because here they serve real Japanese matcha, from the Japanese town of Shizuoka and made by a company of tea farmers that has been around for more than 100 years.

You can order the different matcha dishes, such as the Matcha Parfait or matcha latte, at different levels. The higher the level, the stronger and purer the matcha. Are you trying matcha for the first time? Then it is best to go for a slightly less strong variant. Are you already very familiar with matcha and do you want it extra strong? Then go for the highest level.

Japanese style in a monumental building

The interior of SHIN is modern and minimalist. The concrete construction of the monumental building has been preserved, so that the original design remains clearly visible. In addition, the solid wooden furniture, such as the benches and tables, has been processed in a Japanese way by a craftsman. This means that the furniture connections are made without screws or nails, but by means of dovetail connections.

Red and grass-green details have been used in the restaurant. The red is inspired by the shu-iro temple, which keeps the evil spirits away. The green represents the colour of the matcha.

Also special is the name and logo of the restaurant. The name SHIN can be interpreted in 92 ways, in which they ultimately chose the meaning "renewal", "heart" and "trust", the core values of SHIN. One of the Japanese characters for this looks like a smiley face. So it's not surprising that they have chosen this as the cheerful logo for the restaurant.
