On Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 August, the Park near the Euromast will be transformed into a large open-air stage. During Klassiek in het Park, Rotterdammers can enjoy two days of free classical music, emerging talent, tango and much more. And if you fancy it, you can even join in yourself.
Klassiek in het Park builds on two of Rotterdam’s musical traditions: the Dag van de Romantische Muziek and the Sinfonia Maritiem Concert. This year, the festival has a renewed format, inviting visitors not only to listen, but to experience classical music in all kinds of ways.
Several stages are spread throughout the Park, offering a mix of symphonic music, chamber music, singing, tango and Latin American music. You can easily wander from one stage to another and settle down on a blanket in the grass along the way. There are also various places to enjoy food and drinks.
“We want to show that classical music does not only belong in the concert hall, but right in the heart of society,” says festival programmer Celia Garcia Garcia. “In the Park, you can listen to a symphonic concert, discover a young ensemble under the trees or spontaneously dance along to a live tango orchestra.”
On Saturday, the main stage will be dedicated to symphonic music. Under the direction of conductor Conrad van Alphen, Sinfonia Rotterdam will perform a family concert in the afternoon, followed by a spectacular evening concert. The programme includes music by Rossini and Handel, featuring young, award-winning soloists. The concerts will be presented by Rachel Rosier.
There is also plenty to discover throughout the day on the smaller stages, with performances by Duo Ondine, Noies Quartet, Tacora Cello Duo and Liam Nassereddine, among others.
On Sunday, the festival becomes even more interactive. The deck in front of the main stage will be transformed into a dance floor for live tango and ballroom music. With the passionate OTRA and legendary orchestra The Ramblers, the Park becomes a place not only to listen to music, but to dance to it too.
In collaboration with Codarts and various Rotterdam dance schools, visitors are invited to join in. Whether you are an experienced dancer or simply fancy trying out a few steps, everyone is welcome to take part.
Klassiek in het Park is for all ages. During the family concert, children can discover the world of a real symphony orchestra in an accessible and enjoyable way. There are also performances for younger visitors, including Hieperdepiep! De Kleuteropera and Klassiek op reis met Jutter Thijs.
Children can also get creative on Saturday and Sunday, for example by taking part in activities organised by Klieder en Klodder.
Klassiek in het Park is free to attend. A free ticket is required for the two Sinfonia Rotterdam concerts. If you want to guarantee yourself a seat, you can reserve a chair for €5. Of course, you can also bring your own chair or blanket.
