Between the modern buildings, busy shopping streets and impressive architecture, you will also find places of peace, history and reflection in Rotterdam Centre. Hidden or not to be missed, these four churches each tell their own story about faith, community and the city itself. These are the most special churches in Rotterdam Centre.

Laurenskerk

The Laurenskerk, located on the Grotekerkplein, is the only medieval building in the city centre that survived the Second World War. Built in the 15th century, the church breathes history. From Gothic grandeur to a silent witness to the bombing in 1940. The church was badly damaged, but was fortunately restored later and has since stood as an icon in the city centre.

Nowadays, the Laurenskerk is not only a place for church services, but also for concerts, lectures and exhibitions. The impressive space, the monumental organs and the serene atmosphere make it a unique location in the middle of the city. When you are there, don't forget to climb the tower for a beautiful view of the city.

Arminiuskerk

The Arminius Church, located at the Museumpark, was built in 1895 in transitional architecture with neo-Romanesque elements. The monumental building has a beautiful domed hall with stained glass windows and an impressive organ, making it not only a beautiful church, but also a great setting for various events and concerts that regularly take place here.

Paulus church

Opposite Rotterdam Central Station you will find the Paulus church, a striking modern building that is more than just a church. Designed by British architect Will Alsop and opened in 2007, the Paulus church immediately stands out because of its sculptural, colourful shape.

For decades, the Paulus church has been a place of help, hope and humanity – with special attention for people in vulnerable positions: the homeless, undocumented, refugees and people without a safety net. Based on the belief in radical hospitality, the church offers practical help, but also space for conversation, silence and solidarity.

City Church Het Steiger

A stone's throw from the Koopgoot and the Meent lies the City Church Het Steiger. A hidden spot, but definitely worth a visit. This church was built in the 1950s, as one of the first new churches after the bombing. The architecture is modern and modest, but with the beautiful stained glass windows and the courtyard, it is an oasis of peace in the city.

The church is open to everyone during the week - for a quiet moment, a conversation or just a place to catch your breath. Het Steiger also organizes celebrations, lunch concerts and exhibitions. The church wants to be accessible, and you feel that as soon as you step inside. Whether you are religious or not, everyone is welcome.
