From December 12th to January 4th, the Lijnbaan Plane Tree will be transformed into a beautifully lit Rotterdam wishing tree, right in the heart of the city. This iconic tree, which has witnessed Rotterdam's growth for generations, will be temporarily transformed into a radiant symbol of hope, warmth, and connection.
Each illuminated heart shape around the tree represents a wish from a Rotterdam resident; perhaps for your family, your neighbourhood, a friend, or the city itself. The wishing tree visualizes how we collectively form the heart of Rotterdam and reminds us that we can share light and warmth, especially during the dark winter months. Wishing trees have existed for centuries in other cultures: people there tie ribbons, pieces of paper, or prayers to the branches as a sign of hope or gratitude. Here in Rotterdam, we continue this tradition in an illuminated and festive way.
You can submit your wish by sending an email to warmewinter@rotterdamcentrum.nl. Add a photo, for example, of you by the tree, or an image that reflects your wish. All submissions will be compiled into a commemorative book, which will be presented to the mayor afterward. The most beautiful wishes and photos will also be featured on our website, so everyone can see how Rotterdam residents shine together.
Come along, join in, and let your wish shine in the heart of the city. Together we make Rotterdam a little warmer this winter!
