Rotterdam Architecture Month 2025: Schiemond in the spotlight

Rotterdam Architectuur Maand 2025 3

In June it is that time again: the Rotterdam Architecture Month returns. And this year it will take place in a very special place, namely a forgotten strip behind the Schiehavenhallen in Schiemond.

What was once closed off and neglected will be transformed this month into the vibrant beating heart of the largest architecture festival in the Netherlands.

From frayed edge to festival heart

Why Schiemond? Because it edgy. Because it is alive. And because these kinds of raw, unmade places offer space for experiment and real stories. This year, the Rotterdam Architecture Month is testing how to create a new piece of city; not on the drawing board, but on the street, together with residents and local makers. In June, the quay behind the Schiehavenhallen will be a place full of creativity, encounters and city-making with what is already there.

Together with partners such as Placebased, Gore Tengels and ArchitectuurMAKEN, the quay will be transformed into a circular festival heart. Think of benches made of old wood, planters made of found materials, a grandstand made of residual flows and an architectural starling pavilion.

‘This is my neighborhood’: stories from Schiemond

The photo project 'This is my neighborhood' depicts daily life in Schiemond and the Lloydkwartier. No city maps, but people: playing children, a view from the apartment building, neighbours on a bench. A warm and honest portrait of a neighbourhood in transition, made by AIR (Architecture Institute Rotterdam) and the Groene Connectie.

Grand opening

The RA Month kicks off with a festive opening on Sunday 1 June in the Kroonkwartier. Expect surprise performances, a design market full of local makers, open studios, workshops, guided tours and summer vibes. The iconic Veerhuis and Operator Radio are also participating - including a live radio show and DJ set. Children are very welcome, because there is plenty for them to discover as well.
