The institute presents five solo exhibitions entitled ' First Double 1 & 2 ' with the following artists: Cihad Caner (Turkey) (based in Rotterdam), Jabu Arnell (St. Maarten/Netherlands), Luana Vitra (Brazil), Nolan Oswald Dennis (South Africa), and Sara Sejin Chang (Sara van der Heide) (Netherlands/South Korea). In addition, we show a group exhibition entitled ' Pickup Notes ' with works by: Liz Johnson Artur (United Kingdom), Madiha Sikander (Pakistan/Canada), and Zara Julius (South Africa).
The new exhibitions opening in September will also kick off educational initiatives and new collaborations. Key themes include a focus on drawing in the broadest sense, sonic cultures (sound and music), historical ties between South Africa and the Netherlands, and the creation of "contact zones" that foster connection, unexpected encounters and insights.
Underpinning the programme is an approach that places more value on process than destination, on collective learning, on collaboration, and on the desire to address how we respond to geopolitical demands while proposing that a different order is necessary.
These exhibitions take place on all three floors of the Melly Art Institute and can be seen until Sunday, April 27, 2025.
