Our own mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb has won the World Mayor 2021 award and has thus been named the best mayor in the world! He shares the prize with Philippe Rio, mayor of the French city of Grigny.
Congratulations are in order! Aboutaleb is the first Dutch mayor to have won this honourable prize. He is currently in his third term as mayor of Rotterdam. This makes him the longest-serving and most respected mayor in Europe.
The jury praised Aboutaleb for his commitment to treat all citizens as 'Rotterdammers', regardless of their origin and background. "During his years as mayor, Aboutaleb has always acted like the father of a very large family," said Tann vom Hove, leader of the think tank. According to the jury, Aboutaleb has been leading the municipality of Rotterdam with 'courage, patience and humility' since 2009 and has shown 'exceptional leadership' during the pandemic.
The London City Mayors Foundation, an international think tank dealing with local governance, has awarded the prize to Aboutaleb. This year, the jury looked at mayors who have shown leadership during the Covid-19 pandemic and are now striving to make their cities more economically, structurally, socially and environmentally resilient.
